Dal fry is an authentic food of North India. It is a staple food in every North Indian kitchen. This is a lentil recipe mostly originated in Punjab. A medium spiced food served with steamed rice, pulkas, naan rotis.
This is a very simple recipe but gives restaurant taste of dal. Try dal fry with rice, chapati, pulka
Dal fry recipe
Serves : 3Ingredients
Pegion pea lentil/ thogri bele/toor dal - 3/4 cup
Onion -1 medium, finely chopped
Tomato - 1 medium,finely chopped
Green chilli - 2 , slit
Dry red chilli - 2
Ginger - half inch
Garlic - 4
Curry leaves - 1 strand
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Black seed - half tsp
Cumin seed - 1 tsp
Turmeric powder - half tsp
Red chilli powder - half tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Coriander leaves - 1 tbsp, chopped
Lemon juice - 1 tbsp (optional)
Oil - 2-3 tbsp
Salt to taste
Method
- Pressure cook lentils with a pinch of turmeric along with 1 1/2 cup water for 6 whistles
- after pressure settles down mash lentil well with masher
- In a frying pan/wok, bring 2 tbsp oil to heat, add mustard seeds, after mustard seed splutters, add black seed, Cumin seeds and fry for 4-5 seconds
- add onion and fry till they are translucent
- In a mortar and pestle crush ginger and garlic and add it to frying onions and fry for 2 mins
- now add green chilli, dry red chilli and curry leaves and fry for few seconds
- add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, asafoetida and fry for few seconds
- add tomato and cook till they are soft and mushy
- now add mashed lentils, salt along with 1 cup water and simmer for about 4-5 mins
- bring down from flame and add chopped coriander leaves and lemon juice, mix well and serve
